The Music Fair was designed by MAMTA teachers to help students prepare for
Music
Progressions by testing their knowledge, about four weeks ahead of Music Progressions,
in a non-competitive atmosphere that resembles a county fair:  there are “booths”
(actually studios and rooms in the Music Department at K-State) where students play
music games which test their knowledge of scales and chords, intervals, rhythm, keyboard
topography, note-reading, symbols and key signatures, and listening. They also get to
perform one of the pieces they are preparing for Music Progressions.  They collect points
at each “booth” and, once they have gone through all the booths, proceed to the prize
table where their points are added up.  They then get to choose a prize, or several
smaller prizes, that have a certain point value.

Several years ago, a Pre-Reading level was added to the Music Fair in order to give
beginning students who would not be ready for Level 1 a chance to participate.

MAMTA teachers spend many hours in preparation of the Music Fair, designing, or, if
necessary, re-designing the games, getting materials ready, and decorating the “booths”.
In general, each teacher is in charge of one booth.  The entry fee for the Music Fair is
designed to pay for the prizes (and the copies needed for the tickets); the teachers don’t
receive payment for this event.

We have had as many as 120 students in the Music Fair!  It usually is a lively event which
not only gives the students a chance to test their knowledge ahead of Music Progressions,
but which also allows students to meet with other students of different teachers, all in a
non-competitive atmosphere.
