| High School Piano Clinic TBA Chairperson: Nancy Blockcolsky email: selahmusic@twinvalley.com The Kansas State High School Activities Association sponsors one activity specifically for solo pianists. Each high school student chosen by his or her school is allowed to go to Regional Piano Festival, and those who receive a “Division One” rating at regional qualify for State Piano Festival. There are a number of locations for Regional Piano Festival; Manhattan students, for instance, go to McPherson. State Piano Festival is held in Wichita. Regional Piano Festival is usually the first Saturday of February and State Piano Festival is usually the third Saturday of February. KSHSAA recognizes that solo performance on any instrument or voice enhances the whole school music program, and the solo festivals provide valuable feedback to students regarding their progress and preparation of the pieces they perform. Students who wish to participate are required to participate in their school music departments as pianists, although the extent of the involvement is determined at each school by the music teacher. (For example, a student who accompanies a choir class would automatically qualify. Manhattan High School also allows students wishing to perform in piano festivals to commit to accompany at least one student preparing a solo for voice or another musical instrument at the solo and small ensemble festivals in April.) Manhattan Area Music Teachers Association provides the Manhattan High School students with a preliminary performance which we call “High School Piano Clinic”. This event will allow students to evaluate their own preparedness for Regional and State Piano festivals and to receive feedback from a professional adjudicator. The Piano Clinic takes place during the school day; students sign up to attend the Piano Clinic for one class period. Students will play for an audience consisting of the judge and the other piano students and will receive public comments from the judge. This setting is called a “master class” and allows students to learn not only from their individual times with the judge, but also from the judge’s comments to their peers. Knowing the value that group musical experience holds for students, MAMTA is excited to offer this opportunity to the MHS piano students. There is no entry fee for students to participate. This year’s High School Piano Clinic will be held on Thursday, January 10 in the MHS West Campus auditorium. Students at the East Campus will be allowed to travel to the west campus to participate. Students register for the Piano Clinic by signing up at the high school choral room. A sign-up sheet is provided in the weeks prior to the Piano Clinic. Students should plan to miss the entire class period for which they sign up. Rules for performance are as follows: 1. Students play one piece or movement only. 2. Music must be memorized. 3. Students must bring an original copy of the music for the judge, with measures numbered in pencil. Photocopies are prohibited. 4. Performance is limited to 6 (six) minutes. 5. Unless more than 12 students sign up, entries are limited to six students per class period on a first come, first served basis. 6. Manhattan High School students wishing to participate in Regional Piano Festival will be required to attend the High School Piano Clinic unless they obtain special permission from Nancy Monical, chair of the MHS Music Department.
